Welcome to an authentic Eritrean communal dining experience — traditional flavours, warm hospitality, and sustainably inspired presentation.
Welcome to Fqri Eritrean Restaurant — a place where culture, community, nourishment, and hospitality come together around the table.
Fqri was born from a deeply personal journey. In 2014, the owner arrived in Canada from Eritrea as a refugee in search of safety, opportunity, and a new beginning. What started as an unfamiliar place soon became home. Over the years, Halifax embraced her with warmth, kindness, and community, and it became much more than a city — it became a second home.
Inspired by that experience, Fqri was created to give something meaningful back to the community that welcomed her.
Our restaurant is a celebration of Eritrean culture, tradition, and hospitality. Through shared platters, fresh injera, rich spices, and traditional coffee ceremonies, we hope to introduce Halifax to the beauty of Eritrean dining while contributing to the city's growing cultural diversity.
The owner's background in nutrition also plays an important role in the heart of Fqri. With a degree in nutrition and a lifelong passion for wellness, she believes food should not only bring people together, but also nourish the body and soul. Eritrean cuisine naturally reflects many of these values through wholesome ingredients, plant-based dishes, communal eating, and balanced traditional cooking.
Above all, Fqri is rooted in service. Serving others, creating welcoming spaces, and sharing culture through food has always been part of the vision. Every dish is prepared with care, respect for tradition, and gratitude for the community that made this dream possible.

What to Expect
The Foundation: Injera
At the heart of every meal is Injera — a sourdough-risen flatbread with a unique, slightly tangy flavour and a soft, spongy texture. It's not just our bread; it's our plate and our silverware.
The Experience: Communal Dining
In Eritrean culture, food is meant to be shared. Your meal is served on a large communal platter lined with injera, topped with various Tsebhi (stews). Tear off a piece of injera, scoop up a bit of stew, and enjoy — together.
The Flavours: Bold & Aromatic
Our kitchen is defined by Berbere — a complex spice blend of chili, garlic, ginger and basil — and Niter Kibbeh, a fragrant clarified butter infused with herbs. From the slow-simmered heat of Zigni to the earthy comfort of Shiro, there's a dish for every palate.
A Vegetarian Paradise
Eritrean cuisine is naturally friendly to plant-based diners. Many of our most beloved dishes are vegan — built around lentils, split peas and vibrant vegetables, all seasoned to perfection.

The Eritrean Coffee Ceremony
Coffee is at the heart of Eritrean culture. Our traditional coffee service is a moment of welcome, conversation, and connection — freshly brewed and served with warmth.
In Eritrea, coffee is not simply a drink — it is a tradition, a ritual, and a symbol of hospitality. For generations, families, friends, and neighbours have gathered around the coffee ceremony to share stories, celebrate milestones, strengthen relationships, and welcome guests.
The ceremony begins with the gentle roasting of green coffee beans over an open flame. As the rich aroma fills the room, guests are invited to pause and relax. The freshly roasted beans are then ground by hand and brewed in a traditional clay coffee pot called a jebena. Coffee is served in small cups and traditionally enjoyed through three rounds of pouring, each representing friendship, gratitude, and blessing.
